Homemade Deodorant: A Green Home Project

Homemade deodorant is an easy, frugal way to keep your family smelling swell without the potentially harmful effects of some commercial ingredients.

Deodorant is a product that most people use everyday, but commercial deodorants can have questionable ingredients, such as aluminum that has been linked to cancer and brain disorders. Other ingredients, like parabens, have also been found in commercial deodorants and have health risks associated with them as well. There are natural deodorants available, but it is more frugal, and arguably more fun, to make your own deodorant at home!

This is a tried-and-true homemade deodorant recipe and is appropriate for everyone. The recipe makes about one cup.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 6-8 tbsp solid state coconut oil
  • Essential oil scent (optional)

Directions

  1. Mix equal portions of the baking soda and cornstarch together.
  2. Slowly add in the coconut oil by using a hand blender or mixing with a spoon. Continue with this until the product is solid but pliable. If it remains too wet, add more cornstarch until the desired firmness is found. If desired, add drops of essential oil to scent the deodorant.
  3. The deodorant can be placed in any container which is deemed appropriate, such as an old deodorant container. Some people put the deodorant in a jar with a screw-top lid and scoop it out to apply by hand!

Recommended Essential Oils

Any essential oil can be used, but here are a few that not only are a pleasant scent but have useful properties as well.

Lavender has natural antibacterial properties, which can aid in reducing personal scent. It is also a common essential oil and is easy to find at most health food or natural food stores.

Pine oil has natural deodorizing properties along with antibacterial properties. It has a strong scent though, so if used, be considerate of how much is being added!

Lemon oil offers a combination of antiseptic and astringent properties. These can be especially useful after shaving the underarm region as it can help lessen razor burn. It also has antifungal properties, which can help your deodorant stay fresher longer. It also is a light scent, so if you are looking for an essential oil that won't overpower you, this could be a great choice!

Additional Information

This is not an antiperspirant recipe! The baking soda will lessen the aroma of body odors but will not decrease the amount of sweat produced by an individual.

It is recommended that the deodorant is kept away from heat sources and is stored at room temperature as it may melt if heated.
